New Delhi, March 20, 2025: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Member of Parliament, Gurmeet Singh Meet, reiterated his support for farmers on Thursday, stating that the Punjab government is committed to standing by them. However, he voiced concerns over the adverse economic consequences of blocking the state’s borders, which he claimed are harming Punjab’s economy, industries, and public welfare.
Speaking to the media, Meet emphasized that while AAP has always backed farmers and will continue to do so, the ongoing border blockades are hurting Punjab’s revenue and businesses. He urged farmers to direct their protests to Delhi, where their issues are more directly addressed, rather than causing disruptions that affect the livelihood of ordinary people in Punjab.
Highlighting the lack of industrial growth in Punjab over the last two decades, Meet stressed that keeping the borders open is essential for economic growth and creating jobs for the youth. He explained that the border closures are leading to monthly losses in the range of hundreds of crores, which directly impacts traders and the general population.
While acknowledging that the farmers’ demands are legitimate, Meet insisted that solutions must be found through dialogue with the central government, without causing harm to Punjab’s economy. He also added that the Punjab government, led by AAP, understands the farmers’ struggles as many of its leaders, including the Chief Minister, are connected to farming communities.
