Gidderbaha, March 20, 2025 – Tensions escalated in Punjab as protesting farmers blocked the Bathinda-Ganganagar National Highway near Gidderbaha. The demonstration was held in response to a police operation at the Shambhu and Khanauri borders, where authorities forcibly dismantled protest sites that had been occupied for over a year.

Farmer leaders accused the government of reneging on its promises and resorting to force instead of engaging in meaningful dialogue. They condemned the police action, which involved the use of bulldozers and the detention of several prominent farmer leaders, including Jagjit Singh Dallewal and Sarwan Singh Pandher.

A heavy police presence has been deployed at the protest site to prevent further escalation. Protesters, however, remain steadfast, demanding the release of detained leaders and a renewed discussion on their longstanding demands.

Meanwhile, tensions flared in other parts of Punjab as well. In Moga, farmers clashed with police as they attempted to march towards the Deputy Commissioner’s office, breaking through barricades and leading to scuffles with law enforcement officers. Reports indicate that several farmers were injured in the confrontation.

Various farmer organizations have condemned the crackdown as undemocratic, especially since it coincided with ongoing discussions between senior farmer representatives and central government officials. In response, farmer unions have called for nationwide protests outside deputy commissioners’ offices, vowing to continue their agitation until their concerns are addressed.

As of now, the blockade at the Bathinda-Ganganagar highway remains in effect, with farmers insisting that they will not relent until justice is served. Authorities continue to monitor the situation, and further developments are expected in the coming days.
