Chandigarh:
Tension prevailed in the Sector 25 area of Chandigarh on Wednesday morning after a man was stopped by activists of Hindu organizations on suspicion of supplying beef near a cemetery.
Leaders of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) claimed they had prior information that beef was to be supplied near the cemetery. Acting on this tip-off, members of the Gau Raksha Dal, led by VHP Chandigarh metropolitan minister Ankush Gupta, reached the spot early in the morning and kept a watch.
According to the activists, a man arrived in an auto-rickshaw, delivered some items at the cemetery, and was proceeding further when he was intercepted near the Sector 25/38 light point.
During a search, meat was found in a sack in his possession. Following this, the police were immediately informed and reached the spot to take control of the situation.
Police have taken the matter under investigation, and further action will depend on the verification of the seized meat and legal provisions. Meanwhile, security was tightened in the area to prevent any escalation of tension.
