A key development has emerged in the case of Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh, who is currently lodged in Dibrugarh Jail under the National Security Act (NSA). The Central Government informed the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Saturday that a parliamentary committee will submit its recommendation on Singh’s leave petition by March 10 in the Lok Sabha.
The 15-member ethics committee was constituted by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla earlier this year to examine leave petitions of Members of Parliament who have remained absent for a prolonged duration. The committee’s report will determine whether Amritpal Singh can be granted permission to attend parliamentary sessions.
Amritpal Singh, who was elected as an MP while in detention, filed a formal request for leave, citing that continued absence from Parliament proceedings could result in his seat being declared vacant. As per parliamentary rules, an MP who is absent without permission for 60 consecutive sitting days can face disqualification.
During a hearing in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, government counsel informed the bench that Singh’s application had been duly considered and included in the scope of the committee’s review. The court had earlier sought clarity on the status of the petition and asked whether appropriate steps had been taken to ensure Singh’s right to represent his constituency was preserved.
The court also emphasized that timely action is crucial to protect the democratic rights of the people of Khadoor Sahib, whose representation in Parliament is at stake. The matter is being closely watched both in political and legal circles, especially given the sensitive circumstances surrounding Singh’s detention and the potential constitutional implications.
The parliamentary panel’s report, expected on March 10, will be key in determining the next steps for Singh’s participation in parliamentary proceedings.
