Liquor and Meat Shops to Remain Closed in Several Punjab Districts During Nagar Kirtan

In view of the large-scale Nagar Kirtans being held to mark the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, district administrations in Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Tarn Taran and Ferozepur have ordered the closure of liquor and meat shops on specific dates.

Officials said the decision has been taken to maintain the sanctity of the religious event and to respect the sentiments of devotees participating in the processions.

Amritsar

Deputy Commissioner Rohit Gupta, exercising powers under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) 2023, ordered the closure of liquor vends, pubs, tobacco shops, and egg/meat outlets located along the Nagar Kirtan route on 20 and 21 November. The procession will enter the district from Gurdaspur via Mehta Chowk.

Gurdaspur

District Magistrate Aditya Uppal declared a dry day on 20 November under the Punjab Excise Act, 1914. All liquor and meat shops on the Nagar Kirtan route will remain closed from 20 to 22 November, including licensed premises such as hotels and clubs. The procession will travel from Gurdwara Sangatsar in Hardobathwala towards Batala, Jalandhar Road and then proceed to Sri Anandpur Sahib.

Tarn Taran

District Magistrate Rahul (IAS) ordered the closure of all liquor and meat shops on 21 November along the Nagar Kirtan route, citing powers under BNSS 2023 and the Punjab Excise Act.

Ferozepur

District Magistrate Deepshikha Sharma directed that all egg, meat and liquor shops within the district remain closed on 20 November during the Nagar Kirtan/yatra being conducted under the state government’s programme.

Authorities have instructed all concerned departments to ensure strict compliance with these orders.
