Chandigarh, November 10, 2025:
Tension flared at the Mohali-Chandigarh border on Monday as protesters under the banner of the Panjab University Bachao Morcha confronted police while marching to defend the university’s autonomy.
Hundreds of farmers and students, supported by political leaders from Punjab and Chandigarh, gathered near Phase 6 in Mohali. Chandigarh Police had barricaded all entry points—including Phase 6, Phase 1, Phase 3A, and the Burail Jail route—to prevent their entry into the Union Territory.
The situation escalated when police from Chandigarh and Haryana briefly entered Mohali to control the crowd but were forced to retreat after facing strong resistance.
Prominent farmer leaders such as Balbir Singh Rajewal, Harinder Singh Lakhowal, and Manjit Singh Dhaner led the agitation, joined by others like Lakha Sidhan and Bhana Sidhu. Rajewal stated that Panjab University “belongs to Punjab” and announced that the Samyukt Kisan Morcha would next take up the issue of Punjab’s water rights.
The protest led to massive traffic jams across Mohali and Zirakpur, as police deployed trucks and buses to block access roads and conducted vehicle checks at key points
