Mohali, July 2:
Chaos erupted outside the Mohali district court on Tuesday as senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and former Punjab minister Bikramjit Singh Majithia was brought in by the Vigilance Bureau (VB) in connection with a Rs 540 crore disproportionate assets case.
Dozens of SAD workers had gathered outside the court complex to show solidarity with their leader. Tensions quickly escalated as supporters began shouting slogans against the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, alleging political vendetta behind Majithia’s arrest.
Police erected barricades to prevent the crowd from surging forward, leading to minor scuffles between party workers and law enforcement. In a moment that grabbed attention, Majithia, escorted by VB officials, stopped briefly in front of cameras with hands folded, making a silent yet pointed gesture of resilience.
Majithia was picked up from his residence in Amritsar on June 25 and has been under scrutiny for allegedly laundering drug money and accumulating assets disproportionate to his known sources of income. The case, estimated at Rs 540 crore, is being probed by the Vigilance Bureau under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
Speaking to his aides before entering court, Majithia reportedly said, “I have faced the ED and the Congress regime too. This too shall pass.” His supporters claim that the AAP government is targeting him due to his consistent criticism of Chief Minister Mann and his handling of state affairs.
Meanwhile, the SAD leadership has slammed the Mann government for “weaponising” state agencies to suppress political opponents. The party is expected to raise the issue in the upcoming Assembly session and may also approach the courts seeking relief.
The case has revived the debate around drug-linked political corruption in Punjab and is likely to remain at the centre of the state’s political narrative in the coming weeks.
