Prayagraj | June 30, 2025 —
Violence broke out in Bhadewara Bazar and surrounding areas of Prayagraj on Sunday evening, as supporters of Chandrashekhar Azad, MP from Nagina and chief of the Azad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram), clashed with police forces. The unrest, which lasted over two hours, reportedly left at least six people injured and saw damage to multiple vehicles, including three police jeeps.
The chaos erupted after Azad’s supporters accused the police of blocking his visit to meet families of victims from two sensitive cases — one from Kaushambi and another from Isauta village in Karchana. The victims’ families were reportedly involved in a caste-based assault and a custodial violence case, which had triggered local outrage earlier in the month.
According to Additional CP (Law & Order) Ajay Pal, the situation was swiftly brought under control:
“Adequate police forces were deployed to defuse the tension,” he told TOI, while also alleging,
“Violence was carried out under a planned strategy, despite the fact that victims from Karchana had already been allowed to meet the MP at the Circuit House.”
Police resorted to a lathi-charge to disperse the protesting crowd, which had begun to vandalize public and police property. Senior officials, including DCP (Yamuna Nagar) Vivek Chandra Yadav, reached the site with reinforcements to restore calm.
Authorities have initiated the process of identifying individuals involved in the violence, including those accused of misbehaving with locals and attacking police personnel. “Stern legal action” has been promised. Sources indicate that video footage and CCTV evidence from the area are being analyzed to trace the rioters.
The Karchana and Kaushambi incidents, linked to alleged caste-based atrocities, have become political flashpoints in the region, with Azad vowing to raise the matter in Parliament and demand justice.
